Quick verdict

Red Baron takes the thrill of air combat and turns it into something dull, ugly and mathematically unfavourable. Only the high volatility attracts us, and that is not enough for this slot to fly.

Guru Score

Theme and Storyline

Baron von Richthofen, first world war German aristocrat, fighter ace and winner of the Blue Max, was best known for heading up Jagdgeschwader 1 known as the "Flying Circus" for its brightly coloured aircraft. Famously he led the squadron in a bright red triplane in the later years of the war, earning himself the name "The Red Baron".

For fans of those early days of air combat there are few machines more iconic than his Fokker Dr. I Triplane, and that aircraft is the centrepiece of this slot.

Graphics, Sounds and Animations

Unfortunately for such famously meticulous tactician, the slot that bears his name is a visual mess. The symbols which are drawn badly are thematically bizarre, drawing from the widest possible set of stereotypes including a 1940’s style femme fatale, and equally anachronistic radio set and a dog.

This would be less trouble if the rest of the slot weren’t also hideous. Being built on Aristocrat’s basic slot template it has a characterless frame with a background of blue sky that is marginally less interesting even than the sound effects which are the standard set from every other Aristocrat production.

The gameplay is also utterly bog standard. It is an any way wins slot machine with one twist. You have control over how many win lines you play provided by deciding how many of the reel positions are in play.

The smallest number of win lines allows you to use the 3-1-1-1-1 pattern created by using all the symbols on the first reel and the middle symbols on reels 2 to 5. You can add in the other reels one at a time, with the maximum being all five reels fully activated.

No effort has been expended improving the game mechanics beyond this.

Wilds, Bonuses and Free Spins

The Wild symbols substitute for all other symbols. Unusually this also includes the Scatter.

Scatters only appear on reels 2, 3 and 4. Hitting three of them will trigger fifteen Free Spins.

Before the Free Spins you get to play the Mission Bonus in which the reels spin with Plane symbols on them. If you land four or more planes you win four times your total bet. The more Planes you land on the reels the more you win, up to 140 times your bet for 20+ Planes.

Bet Sizes, RTP and Variance

The range of bets on the site we tested ran from a minimum of $/£/€0.25 per spin to a maximum bet per spin of $/£/€25.00. This range is a bit small but will serve the middle-stakes player pretty well.

The return to player of this game is 95.70%. A little lower than our yardstick of around 96%. Not disastrously low, and somewhat mitigated by the fact that the game has high volatility. This does allow it to pair well with our preferred strategies, although we would ideally like to see a higher RTP.

While this slot has little to offer visually, and even less to offer in interesting gameplay, it is given a mild boost by its high volatility. Unfortunately, the RTP isn’t high enough to make it worth the players' time.

We would suggest you steer your biplane well clear of Red Baron.
